Turkeys, turkeys everywhere! During the week before Thanksgiving the boys and girls couldn't wait for their turn at the easel to paint their very own turkey! Then it was time for several big decisions. "Should my turkey have a round or an oval body, and how many feathers should he have?" Then there were so many colors to choose from and the tricky part was how to keep from mixing them together. Last but not least, the turkey was not only given a name, but he was able to tell a story!
The field trip to Publix was quite an exciting event, as the the children not only shopped for their Thanksgiving feast, but learned about all of the special departments of the grocery store.
Before entering the meat department to see how beef was ground and packaged, we put on hairnets!
After the tour of the store, it was time to take our lists and shop.
Mrs. Patel came to tell us about, Diwali, also called the "Festival of Lights, " which is a very special celebration in India where family and friends come together to enjoy food, fun and gifts. After watching a slideshow of the many traditions that take place during Diwali, the children tried on beautiful clothing and jewelry and even had a delicious snack!
After reading "Give Thanks For Each Day" by Steve Metzger and "Thanksgiving Day" by Anne Rockwell, the children tore paper strips for feathers of their "I Am Thankful Turkeys!" They added feet, eyes, beak and a waddle before sharing things that they are thankful for.
In Music class with Mrs. McIvor, the children played the gathering drum while singing Native American songs.
The children enjoyed learning about the way of life of the Native American people.
Then it was time to prepare for the Thanksgiving feast! We all measured and mixed the ingredients for the brownies.
Pulled the grapes from the vine and cut them in half...
Shucked the corn...
Made Native American vests...
And enjoying a delicious feast with family and friends! Thank you parents for all of your help and for being there on such a special occasion. We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday
