Turkeys, Publix, Diwali and Thanksgiving Feast

Turkeys, turkeys everywhere! During the week before Thanksgiving the boys and girls couldn't wait for their turn at the easel to paint their very own turkey! Then it was time for several big decisions. "Should my turkey have a round or an oval body, and how many feathers should he have?" Then there were so many colors to choose from and the tricky part was how to keep from mixing them together. Last but not least, the turkey was not only given a name, but he was able to tell a story!

The field trip to Publix was quite an exciting event, as the the children not only shopped for their Thanksgiving feast, but learned about all of the special departments of the grocery store.

Before entering the meat department to see how beef was ground and packaged, we put on hairnets!

After the tour of the store, it was time to take our lists and shop.

Mrs. Patel came to tell us about, Diwali, also called the "Festival of Lights, " which is a very special celebration in India where family and friends come together to enjoy food, fun and gifts. After watching a slideshow of the many traditions that take place during Diwali, the children tried on beautiful clothing and jewelry and even had a delicious snack!

After reading "Give Thanks For Each Day" by Steve Metzger and "Thanksgiving Day" by Anne Rockwell, the children tore paper strips for feathers of their "I Am Thankful Turkeys!"  They added feet, eyes,  beak and a waddle before sharing things that they are thankful for.

In Music class with Mrs. McIvor, the children played the gathering drum while singing Native American songs.

The children enjoyed learning about the way of life of the Native American people.

Then it was time to prepare for the Thanksgiving feast! We all measured and mixed the ingredients for the brownies.

Pulled the grapes from the vine and cut them in half...

Shucked the corn...

Made Native American vests...

And enjoying a delicious feast with family and friends! Thank you parents for all of your help and for being there on such a special occasion. We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday

Fruits, Vegetables, Poetry in the Park and the new "Publix"

Before exploring the inside of the pineapple, an avocado, a grapefruit and a strawberry that we had recently been observing on the outside, the children made predictions guessing which fruit might have the largest seed. The strawberry wasn't even a mystery, because it's tiny little seeds are on the outside! After the predictions were made, each fruit was sliced open as the children observed how different the fruits looked on the inside. The avocado definitely had the biggest seed of all and after researching we learned that the top of the pineapple with it's green prickly leaves when planted, grows into a new pineapple!

The most fun was finally being able to taste all of those fruits we had been observing. Believe it or not,
everyone tried at least a bite of each fruit!

Finally, the children took the seeds from each of the fruits and planted them in the garden.

In P. E. on Wednesday Alpha students learned how to dribble a basketball. Coach Every, Coach Pope and Coach Wolfrath were said they were impressed!

When  carving the jack-o-lantern the children removed all of it's many seeds from the inside. This week after the seeds had been baked with three different flavors, the boys and girls were able to taste each kind to determine which was their favorite. After deciding which tasted best... Cinnamon Sugar, Plain or Salty,  they filled in their choice in the bar graph.

"My First Thanksgiving" by Tomie de Paola was a great introduction to the meaning of Thanksgiving.
The  children learned that the Native Americans and the Pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving, and now each year in the month of November, families celebrate this special day with family and friends with a big feast! Together the class decided on a list of food that they would like to have for our feast here at school, making sure we selected foods from all of the food groups and of course we didn't forget dessert! On Monday both Alpha classes will take a trip to Publix, and following a tour of the grocery, the children will shop for our upcoming feast!

In preparation for our feast, the children are making their own placemats for the table. They chose the colors for each turkey's body and feathers. After having their hands painted, they made handprints to represent turkeys!

Turkey hats are also being made for the celebration. First they decorated the headband, folded paper strips in a zig zag for legs and then glued the waddle to the turkey's head and added a few colorful feathers!

NEWS UPDATE!!  A new Publix store recently opened in the Exploratorium. There are jobs available at the cash registers, baggers and shelf stockers!!!
Alpha students are really having fun exploring their new store, just like the real store that we will be visiting on Monday! Some children are filling their shopping baskets with the groceries they need, while others are busy checking them out and bagging their groceries. If they need help finding a price, they pick up the phone and call for a price check!

Then they take their groceries home and put them away in the cabinets and refrigerator, before preparing a family meal.

We had a special mystery reader this week that read, "Oh The Places You'll Go!" by Dr. Seuss.

"The Frog on the Log" by Joe Orr
On Thursday The Friendly Frogs did such a fabulous job reciting their poem on stage. What a beautiful, crisp fall morning for Poetry in the Park. They were also a great audience as they listened intently to each class read their poems. Thank you so much parents for joining us for this special event!

After reading about the Native Americans, the types of houses they lived in such as teepees or chickees and the meanings of symbols they drew to represent things that were important to them such as sunshine, water, mountains, plants and rain, the  boys and girls painted symbols on a long brown banner that we will use to make our classroom teepee.
Upcoming dates to remember:
11/12 Field trip to Publix
11/16 Thanksgiving Exploring and Feast
11/26 - 11/30 Thanksgiving Break

Jack-o-Lanterns, Halloween and Fall Exploring

The children really put  their fine motor skills to work this week when making their pumpkin necklaces. Not only did they thread the yarn through the two holes at the top of their pumpkin, they then threaded colored beads of their choice creating different patterns.

After planning the shapes that the children wanted to have for our class jack-lantern, we drew the face and then carved it. We compared the shapes as we drew them on our pumpkin.

Next came the really fun part....discovering what was inside! Using spoons, scoops and even our bare hands, we pulled out "gook" and seeds and even more seeds. Then the statement was made, "I wonder how many seeds there are in this pumpkin." Many different predictions were made. Next we will count the seeds to see which prediction was the closest. Then we might even taste them after they are baked!
During rest we turned out the lights and lit the candle. Our jack-o-lantern was ready just in time for....

H                A              L            L                 O              W             E         E              N!

What a surprise to see a flamingo, a skeleton, a wizard and so much more at the Friendly Frog's door on Halloween morning!

Then we were off to the Halloween Parade!

Have you ever seen anything cuter than this??? Alpha and JK students watched in delight as each Lower Division class paraded by in their costumes, before heading to the "big gym" to parade across the stage!

After a yummy spider snack and some fun games, it was time for even more fun at the Fall Festival!

A little bird saw four very friendly witches having fun at the festival!

Making turkey handprints at Exploring on Friday was a real treat. Each child was able to choose the color that they wanted their hands and fingers to be painted, before making their turkey handprints. These will be used for placemats at the upcoming Thanksgiving Feast!

The children decorated headbands, folded paper strips into zigzags for turkey legs and added feathers for the turkey hats that they will wear at our feast.

The children learned how to tap, bounce and tickle the large gathering drum and a smaller hand drum with Mrs. McIvor, keeping the rhythm and creating different sounds.

Rinsing vegetables in the colander and then scrubbing them clean was a "must do" before filling the cornucopia for a table decoration.

Last but not least, the children made the cutest and yummiest turkey snacks ever. Some turkeys had their feathers laying down and some were standing straight up!!
